PLANETARY HOURS: HOW MEDIEVAL MAGICIANS ACTUALLY TOLD TIME
Open the Key of Solomon and before a single circle is drawn, the text stops you at the clock. Operations of Venus belong to the hours of Venus; works of Saturn to Saturn's hours. Get the hour wrong and, the compilers warn, the whole operation is void. But the hours they meant are not the ones on your phone.

The system, spelled out in Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy (Book II, ch. xxxiv), works like this: divide the time between sunrise and sunset into twelve equal parts - those are the day hours. Divide sunset to sunrise into twelve - the night hours. In summer a day hour stretches long; in winter it shrinks. The medieval hour breathes with the season.
Each hour takes a planetary ruler in the Chaldean order - Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon - repeating endlessly. The first hour of each day belongs to that day's ruler: Sunday's first hour to the Sun, Monday's to the Moon, Tuesday's to Mars, and so on. Run the sequence forward and it lands, twenty-four hours later, exactly on the next day's ruler. The week itself is the wheel's fingerprint.

Time the work to the planet: love under Venus's hour, binding under Saturn's, commerce under Mercury's. Both the Key and Agrippa treat this as non-negotiable procedure, as fixed as a court calendar.

The computation is real and exact: sunrise and sunset are astronomical facts, the division is arithmetic, and the Chaldean order is the planets ranked by apparent orbital speed - a genuinely astronomical sequence. Why the order of the days proves the system is old
Here is the elegant part. Why does Sunday follow Saturday follow Friday? Take the Chaldean order, count every twenty-fifth hour, and the sequence of first-hour rulers reads: Saturn, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus - Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. The order of our weekdays is the planetary-hours system fossilized in plain sight. Cassius Dio noticed this in the third century; it still checks out with pencil and paper.

No. A planetary hour is one-twelfth of the actual daylight (or night) at your location, so its length changes daily - from roughly 45 minutes in midwinter to 75 in midsummer at mid-latitudes.
What is the Chaldean order?
Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon - the seven classical planets ranked from slowest to fastest apparent motion. It is the sequence planetary hours cycle through.
